The future is local, says commission

Experts believe neighbourhood partnerships are the best way to bring about the improvements needed to improve quality of life and safeguard towns and cities against climate change. A new report from the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) says a neighbourhood-based approach is the most cost-effective way to upgrade local infrastructure.

Total Place ‘whole area approach’

Total Place is a new initiative that looks at how a ‘whole area’ approach to public services can lead to better services at less cost. It seeks to identify and avoid overlap and duplication between organisations – delivering a step change in both service improvement and efficiency at the local level, as well as across Whitehall.

Big Society ideal should follow real life examples

A think tank has used two regeneration success stories to come up with a series of recommendations – including introducing ‘micro mayors’ – for wannabe Big Society communities to learn from. Following the lead of Castle Vale and Balsall Heath as ‘examples of community regeneration, collective efficacy and civic re-engagement’ could help ‘inject some gritty realism into the Big Society narrative.

As part of the Take Part Regional Pathfinder Champion Programme, Birmingham is offering facilitators a free 2-day familiarisation with ‘VOICE’ a discussion-based tool specifically designed to help community groups and networks.

Birmingham City Council facing £1billion bill after women win equal pay case

Birmingham City Council is facing a potential £1 billion bill after losing an equal pay tribunal, a lawyer claimed. More than 4,000 female workers took the authority to an employment tribunal claiming they should be paid the same as men for doing the same job.

May 6th Elections Advice for Networks

On May 6th, voters in Birmingham will be going to the polls to elect councillors in each of the city’s 40 wards and MPs for each of the ten Birmingham Parliamentary constituencies.

Election time is, of course, a good time for Community Networks to raise issues facing members and the communities they represent. Some groups have already organised hustings.

Handsworth Central Neighbourhood Forum Public Meeting

Handsworth Central Neighbourhood Forum and the Birchfield Neighbourhood Policing team will be holding a joint public meeting on Wednesday 10th March, 18:30-20:00. The agenda will cover a variety of local issues, including the regeneration of Birchfield, the Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre at Midland Heart, and feedback from the Birchfield Neighbourhood Police Team.
