Spring 2010 saw the birthday celebration of the St Marks Estate in Ladywood Birmingham [on 22nd May 2010].  over the past 4 decades the area has developed into a diverse and vibrant community consisting of many different nationalities but with a feeling of pride and togetherness which was very evident on the day.

Pictures from the event will be provided shortly!

Organised by the St Marks Estate Residents Group and supported by agencies including Birmingham City Council (Ladywood ward community chest), Be Birmingham, Urban living and the Bromford Group, residents turned out in their hundreds to enjoy a range of attractions on the day.  There was something for everyone including bouncy castle and super slide for the children, the ever popular smoothie bike for the more active residents and a gospel choir, steel band and jazz band for the those with a musical ear.

An artist was also commissioned by Urban living to capture some of the memories and thoughts of residents who have lived in the area over the years.  Blessed by fantastic weather, the Nelson School field became a hive of activity for both young and old alike.  One local resident said ‘ it’s great to celebrate the 40 years that this Estate has been in existence.  Although we have a range of different communities we all feel really proud about the area and want to see further improvements on what it has to offer.  The residents group does a great job in getting local people involved in working with partners like the Council, Police and social landlords to address issues and organise events such as the birthday celebration.  I hope the next 40 years is as good as the first 40!’
